Humanism Not Equal to Feminism?

I'm not sure that it is. Maybe your friend sees it that way, but consider all of the ways in which racism, even blatant racism is completely ignored in our society. Both racial minorities and women have been accused of "whining" about nothing. In the same way that women are accused of getting a job or promotion just because they are physically attractive, minorities are accused of getting such because of affirmative action. Maybe your friend doesn't think feminism is "cool" or worth complaining about because as a male in our society he may not be personally impacted by sexism. So many males buy into sterotypes that are both holding them back and encouraging sexism. To him, the idea of a intelligent, strong woman saying something that has such an impact on him, may in the back of his head be threatening to him. It may not be that he is being intentionally sexist, but because of the way he has been socialized in our society, women gaining positions that he feels he cannot gain, makes him feel threatened as an individual and a male, as if his rights and liberties are being taken away.

Interesting point. It's all part of that "f-word" mentality that people have. I think a lot of the resistance we find is out of insecurity--women who feel like they don't live up to the expecations of second-wave feminism and men who wonder if they don't actually judge people according to gender or sex... or who know that they do.

Race is something that separates. It creates clear cut categories, whereas sex must include diversity and variety that makes it harder to pinpoint. Even an attack that's inherently misogynistic, say, against a Latina or other minority women's group, would be considered racist before it was considered sexist (if the perpetrators fit an easy profile--not that minority).

Going back, I have to differ with Brooke. Saying that men "may not be personally impacted by sexism" is a hard statement to make; we're all impacted by it, sometimes in ways that we don't even realize. It's one reason why your friend reacted the way he did--sexism has obviously made an impression on him in that he believes it's blown out of proportion. It makes him feel as if advantages are being unfairly given to women--that's clearly related to sexism.

I'm no psychologist. But the anti-feminists have always intrigued me.

I think, Daniella (and Amelia), that one thing to bear in mind per "anti-feminists," is that there are points to be netted by taking that road, no matter your gender.

As someone who has been very visible over the last decade online, in all she does, I know I've had a real object lesson in that one. I've always been feminist, but the more my feminism develops, the more I talk about it, and the more I go places that ask MEN to question things or evaluate their sexism (as well as the women who have hitched their wagons to them, and by virtue of such, enjoyed some of the benefits those men net under patriarchy), the less nice a lot of people have been towards me, the more people and some colleagues have decided I am The Enemy, even though my tone hasn't changed, and I'm still the same-old Heather I always was. If, on the other hand, I started talking about men's rights, or the men who suffer in combat, or men who can't get custody, I assure you, my treatment would be very different, certainly from men, but even among women.

(And it's something like that, right there, if I'm ever in doubt, that tells me everything I need to know about whether or not sexism is a real issue and feminism is needed. If, no matter what I say, addressing issues specific to women, unrelated to men, gets me in the doghouse but addressing issues specific to men gets me a pat on the head? Yeah.)

I've had similar reactions to asking people to ask hard questions about class, or when I talk about growing up poor, or talk about surviving violence and abuse, though with those, I usually meet silence. Per feminism, I get anger more often. Or statements of disappointment in me.

Point is, in many ways it does NOT pay to use the f-word. While, perhaps obviously, being feminist and acting in the interest of feminism DOES benefit all of us -- per the right to vote, per reaching pay equity, per getting education, fair housing, per lesbian rights, per rape and abuse treatment, et cetera -- saying that is what one is doing often does not. Thus, the tired, old, "I'm not a feminist, but..."

I love this post, and I think the comments so far have opened it up really nicely to discussion. I tend to side w/Amelia and Daniella on this one- racial discrimination is considered more inappropriate than sexual/gender discrimination in our metaculture. Race can -appear- to create "clear-cut categories"- and sometimes ppl on both sides of the argument want the dividing line to be clear-cut; however, anyone of mixed race can tell you race simply isn't that easy. But if we pretend race is easy to id, then it's easier to be a racist, or to avoid racism. Sex/gender opens up an unavoidable can of worms, however, b/c performance (how we act like women or men) and physical sex (how we are assigned "M" or "F" at birth)are not inherently related. (For example, I'm in an AIM conversation right now about how the mincing walk of high-heel wearers used to be a marker of upper-class masculinity!) So is any particular act of sexism denigrating the sex, or the gendered action? I think this complexity makes sexism more difficult to assess than the more superficial kinds of racism. & we all know how lazy we can all be! Really digging into these issues is hard work (go AGA!) and sometimes we all fall into the trap of the easy assessment.

I've noticed so so many times in the past year or so that, if I bring up issues and just discuss them, people tend to agree with me. But if I use the word 'feminism' in starting a conversation, people look at me funny and are automatically going to disregard things I say, on principle.

On a similar note, I was browsing online tshirt stores today to find a birthday present for my brother and came across a tshirt with the line "You're a feminist? How cute." With the 'cute' written in pink italics. Grrrrr.

I'm not saying men are not impacted by sexism at all. Look at the sentence after the one you quoted. Sure we all have to deal with the impact of sexism, or racism or whatever. However, its a lot harder to realise that sexism and racism occur and that you are being impacted by that, when you are not part of the group that is being oppressed. Part of the reason why Martin Luther King was such a great leader was that he was able to show white people that they weren't benefiting from the institutional racism that existed, that white people, black people, all people could benefit from equality. So many men do not realise that the patriarchy is hurting them as well, in fact many women do not see that sexism still exists. Also, as women its a lot easier to see how sexism effects us. There are laws banning us from accessing our rights, where as men just have to deal with breaking down social barriers.

I don't know, but I don't think that one can really argue that it is not more acceptable to fight against racism than sexism, overall. Example: One would never imagine separating sports according to race, although at times it seems the races are inherently different in ability on average. However, the idea of segragating sporting events by sex is not only widely practiced but hardly noticed or questioned. It's incredibly taboo to express doubt in a leader's capability on account of race - but sex? It's almost expected. I agree with Dr. K in this right - the categorization of people by race/sex/etc seems to me an excuse for people not to think... and sex is not so easily shown ambiguous as race. It isn't an easy subject to tackle and thus the masses(pardon the arrogance) prefer acceptance of tradition and an easygoing assuredness that, certainly, those thousands of generations that came before have gotten the whole sex-difference thing figured out by now...

As am I. Just as I am baffled at how easily politicians and military folk can get away with sytematically denying women access to combat positions solely because of their sex. And how most people hardly blink an eye at the fact that there have been no female presidents as of yet ... And how noone questions the assosiation of female with weakness and passivity and the association of male with strength and dominance when so many people defy such stereotypes ..

I honestly think it has to do with challenging the widely held and applied concepts of masculinity and femininity. Feminism was propagandized into pseudo-failure by people who were annoyed that their fathers' and mothers' family values were being challenged. Now, younger people are tired of hearing about it because they, too, feel that the generations before had it all figured out. And they don't want to waste their time thinking further of it. We can only push it so far, jeez!
