This Is What a Feminist Looks Like

Sadly so many people just don't care about issues that don't pertain directly to them.

Alot of women just don't care or think about issues that pertain to mothers at large until they themselves become mothers...and I think the statistic is that 80 percent of women
eventually become mothers. I am actually getting into the doula world and midwifery world.
I've always found birth to be a fascinating thing. However I have no kids and mostly this fact kept me from getting into the doula/midwifery world til literally about one month ago. (Most women in the doula/midwifery field have kids.)

That self-consciousness mostly went away within about a week of my getting involved with my local doulas and midwives. I learned quickly that more than anything else women--mothers- want *allies*--sort of how you are expressing here.
I was reading my copy of "Our Bodies Ourselves" recently and it was weird to see how MUCH that classic manual informed women of birth
being something empowering,powerful and something that should be
returned to the community of women in a radical way. They presented tons of info. and pushed necessity for change re childcare too.
They presented all
the info. in a totally motherhood-affirming way-- and yet,that
fat,radical,motherhood-affirming chapter of such a seminal feminist
work as "OUR BODIES OURSELVES",still went largely unseen. Birth control should really be seen wholistically-to includes everything from prevention, contraception, abortion, birth--all that can be birth control. All that should be under the absolute control and choice of each individual woman.

No matter how much work feminists did in the 60s and 70s to open woman-centered birth centers and distribute info. for mothers about nursing,birthing,etc-- we still don't tend to think of feminists as being the ones who helped
usher in the various woman-empowering mothering movement though. I think it may've just fizzled out... and maybe there was a break between "Motherearthy" feminists and other feminists? Maybe "Ms." just figured, "ahhh they're better at mother-specific issues anyway..?"
However "Mothering" isn't feminist*enough* for me,personlly,and never has been,and I don't think ever proclaimed itself to be --however it feels like it is sometimes. It's hard to find a synthesis from either side....

Sometimes I think public inability to accept or even comprehend the
complexity of womankind helped create that dichotomy between "mothers"
and "feminists" as two distinct and separate entities...aka how could selfish feminists be mother-affirming? It's like people can't wrap their heads around it, but women have been dealing w/life and death since forever. But oevrall it's just misogyny that leads to this unwillingness to respect the autonomy of women and their right to BE.

Too I know that in fact mothers' issues *are* too ignored by feminist groups--"then" and now.I think maybe some feminists themselves felt/feel this same internal conflict.
Necessarily if you avoid mothers issues you are avoiding,actually, the majority of women on the planet. Certainly women in poorer countries, but women in the richest countries too. You can't really be a globally-minded or realistic feminist if you ignore mothers issues.
Overall...the childcare issue is HUGE. There's a woman at my local small grocery-- on welfare but forced to work far away from where she lives (I live in the country --she lives in the next big city over.)
She is ready to give birth to her second child. She can only take 3 weeks off at the *most* ,because she simply can't afford anything more.:(** That to me is just heartbreaking,no.1, and no. 2--has horrible consequences for our society at large. This hardworking woman has exactly 3 weeks to nest, spend time with her 2 year old, recover and bond with her new baby-- and then her newborn goes to a daycare center. His/her immune system will still be underdeveloped....it's so so sad. The mom may not get to nurse, which isn't good for her or the baby. The baby will be more prone to getting sick...and our healthcare is for crap.
3mos. should be the bare minimum newborns/moms get to be off with their babies,*with pay*. But yeah...we are sooo far away from that in thsi country. Instead many people have a knee jerk angry reaction to this mom for being on welfare. But like most women, she works her ass off and keeps the planet moving forward. Without a billion of her damn straight the richest would not be that rich. I think a society that doesn't support mothers is severely twisted. The US version of "support"is laughable, and even that little bit is given with judgement.

That's cool your comment was awesome. Maternity leave has recently become an issue, but we also cannot forget that we have one of the highest maternal (and infant) death rates in the world. I agree Mothering is not exactly feminist focused but they do have feminist articles related to their primary focus which is attachment parenting. Which considering how many attachment parents are conservative anti-feminist is pretty brave of them to take that leap.
