Frustration breeds Inspiration.
About a week and a half ago, Kampire pointed out the plight of the Biting Beaver (link) for us to see an actual story of a woman denied EC. Over at her blog (link), she's posted her story cut and dried, and it's empowering. As a young feminist in this rich internet socio-political community, I strangely (and rather guiltily) feel more proud of her actions than sorry for her troubles. I'm thrilled with the fact that she's living rpoof they're all wrong--all those anti-choicers out there unreasonable enough to believe that denying a women EC fights abortion, that a 24 hour waiting period will change a woman's mind when that's all she's probably thought about since she learned she was pregnant, that abortion directly results in depression and anxiety disorders.
With this event, the feminist blogosphere collectively stood up and said, "This is one of our sisters who has inspired our thoughts and, in some cases, has shown us the ropes in feminist issues." For some of us new to the feminist school (me, for one), the blogosphere has been the biggest contributor to my feminist experience. From news sources to petitions, YouTube videos to ad criticism, I have many of the prominent feminist blogs and internet news and fact sources to thank for my feminist education. The Biting Beaver's experiences are a virtual second-hand account for those of us fortunate enough not to have been in her situation; she is, like so many bloggers, the equivalent of older sister and mentor. The true strength of the blogosphere, particularly the feminist blogosphere, is the sense of community it fosters through crosslinking and common goals.
I encourage you not only to check out Kampire's and the Biting Beaver's posts but also to reply to this entry with a feminist or political blog that you read (outside of the AGA, of course). Though I read Pandagon, Feministing, Feministe, and the Beaver, they're a small sampling of the commentary that I feel is becomign more and more mainstream.
I read...
Bitch, PhD, who is a feminist academic and often blogs about feminism, family, academics, and bras :).
