AGA Roll Call: It's a Bird! It's a Plame! It's SheRa?
Wow: you guys really dug into that forum thread about your favorite movie sheroes! That's fantastic!
I got thinking, though, that your posts expressed a range of ways of looking at cinema, and I thought it might be interesting to see some more formal essays about your favorite female characters.
So. Your assignment, if you choose to accept it, is to tell us about your favorite female film characters. However, make your essays full: tell us why they are your favorites, and because it is part of the goal of this site, consider to what degree these characters are feminists.
Consider these questions as you write:
- - what actions do the characters do that makes me believe they are feminists?
- do I like strong female characters who may not be feminists?
- can a feminist character exist in a misogynist film?
- does the feminism of the actress/ voice artist show through the characterization for you?
- are we trained to suspend our feminism when we suspend disbelief, as is required in reading/viewing any fictional work? (Just in case: suspension of disbelief is the principle by which we can watch Pirates of the Caribbean and see fighting skeletons and enjoy it, without believing that Actual fighting skeletons were filmed for the movie).
