You know, as much as I agree with you on how sex is treated in the US, I'm not sure what we've got going in Germany is much better. We're at a point where we have concluded that STIs no longer exist because we've been so good about sex ed and stuff. The result is that the rate of HIV infections has gone back up and that the only STI you can get tested for with any kind of routine is Chlamydia. Everything else gets you a raised eyebrow and incredulous questions from the doc.
On the other hand, we're starting to wake up again, too. We have a really huge campaign to promote the HPV shot, to the point that famous actresses are appearing in tv commercials for it. That's a huge step forward.

I have to agree with you. The way the media spins everything in america is insane when it comes to sex. Here, the HPV vaccine is made to look as if it's a new vaccine, with little research behind it that is too new to give to our precious, young girls. In the UK, they are basing their new government program to give the vaccine to 12-13 year old girls on statistics about first sexual experiances. The BBC news the other night highlighted the drug's safety and potential to save thousands of women's lives, a "whole generation of girls" as they put it. Here the controversy over the vaccine is always highlighted in our media, rarely the potential benofits. Here they highlight parents who think their daughters are too young to be given the vaccine, even too young to be told about STDs. On the BCC they showed a mom carrying her toddler aged daughter on her hip saying she believes the HPV vaccine is a great thing and wants it to be given to young girls. We would never see that in our media. Here we are constantly told it's our parents responsibility to inform us about sex. But our parents are completely uninformed too! My boyfriend's mom who has a child a year younger then me. She knows nothing about modern ways of preventing pregnancy; she doesn't know about plan B, the abortion pill, Japanese condoms, low dose birth control pills or depo. Actually, why should she? She got her tubes tied almost 20 years ago when they advertised spermicide as a great way to prevent pregnancy. It's the blind leading the blind!

I'm not sure why, but there it is. I have an illogical phobia, worse than most, about needles. I hate them. I won't go into the same ROOM they gave the HIV shots in and I won't have a needle stuck into my skin. After all, there are other ways to prevent it, too, and I'd rather use those.

So there you go. Yes, we do need to start paying more attention to STDs and pregnancy PREVENTION (not what happens when you get one), but also, I think that while the vaccines should be free and recommended, I don't believe in mandatory needles. (There are a few that it makes sense; some are a helluva lot more dangerous. I would get an AIDs needle, but...) At least, I'm pretty sure it was HIV that the shots were for... I don't even care enough to remember.

While I understand your fear of needles (my sister has the same fear), the proposals for making the HPV shot mandatory would include an opt-out for people that don't want their kids to have it.

Basically, making it mandatory would force more insurance companies to cover it, as well as possibly getting other aid like free health clinics to provide the vaccine. This would widen access to the vaccine for poor and uninformed parents, and give them a reason to get the shot.

Julia, your posts are always well-informed and fun to read. I love it. I've read and agreed with many writers on this topic but its that much more effective to read this kind of opinion from one of the people who abstinence education is supposed to be "saving"

I agree with you on most of your main points. I'm not so sure I want the HPV vaccine to be mandatory, though I think it does help for the peace of mind. I recently recieved the second of the three shot course of Gardasil. Though I do not plan on being in the position where i could contract HPV, it is certainly easier on the mind knowing I'm better protected if something happens that I can't control, such as a partner lying about having HPV or being raped. It didn't make my opinion on sex change. It's not like, now that I'm better protected I feel more free to be more lax about protection while having sex. It's just another precaution. And though I realize that some people prefer other methods, the Gardasil shot eases my mind about what could happen in a situation I can't control. Being a rape victim, this kind of comfort is definitely welcome.
