Returning to Africa after 3 and a half years in university in the United States comes with a certain amount of “reverse culture shockâ€. Not just culturally but personally because my views on life have grown and expanded due to the immeasurable impact of higher education and expatriate living. Coming home for me has had to include the unfortunate experience of wrapping some of my more radical opinions in tissue paper and putting them away, until I am better able to express them and the society I live in is more ready to accept them. When people are still struggling with the issue of basic human rights; having enough to eat and electing political representatives whose sole purpose is not self-aggrandizement, then the more abstract issues must be set aside, or at least related to this bigger picture.
I am finding this especially difficult when faced with the demonization of homosexuality in Uganda today. In Zambia, where I grew up, it was illegal, yes. What else can be expected of a country which constitutionally declares itself a “Christian Nation� Still it was not a talked-about issue, which is discriminatory in and of itself, but is something to be thankful for compared with the current situation in Uganda. These are, after all, places where men can walk down the street holding hands without having their sexuality questioned. Growing up, queer rights were not something I spent much time thinking about, a privilege for a relatively straight kid like myself. I know that I thought criminalizing homosexuality was ridiculous, but it was only in the university environment that it became an issue I was passionate about.
In the car with my aunt this weekend I felt compelled to say something about what I had seen earlier that day: A bus, equipped with loudspeaker and T-shirt-ed volunteers campaigning against homosexuality. This type of advertising is not uncommon, but is usually reserved for the promotion of mosquito nets and other health strategies. The idea that some church or politician had paid for this was so repellent to me that I looked past the advice my brother had given me on a 2007 visit not to (as Em put it in an earlier post) “start†with relatives when it came to queer issues.
At first my aunt agreed with me. Our politicians do, after all, have more important things to spend their money on than what goes on in the privacy of other people’s bedrooms. But as I warmed up to the subject that I have become increasingly passionate about, I could see her getting uncomfortable. “Homosexuality is not something that I condone, but… it’s not something I spend time getting worked up over…â€

Inwardly I groaned. The recruitment idea is perhaps the most dangerous of rhetorical weapons. Last month a self-proclaimed “former homosexual†(sponsored by the Family Life Network no less) had made it to the front page of the newspaper by “admitting†that he had made “recruitments†in schools. I wanted to rip his well-manicured eyebrows off his lying face I was so angry. The idea that homosexuals are IN UR SCOOLZ, CORRUPTIN YR YOUF makes people like my aunt who would ordinarily have a “live and let live†attitude, support the people who would exploit ideological differences for their own benefit.
“That is pure fear-mongering,†I responded “Are you telling me, Aunty, that if someone had come up to you when you were 15 and told you to be a lesbian, you would be one now?â€
“They target poor kids…â€
“…and what? Tell them being gay will make them rich?â€
“…they offer them money…†and then she abruptly changed the subject, asking her little girl in the backseat about something, as if to remind me she was there.
There are so many dangerous attitudes being brought to the fore with the homosexuality argument and yet it is one that is being made public, not to improve the coverage of human rights but to distract from the more pressing issues facing the average Ugandan today. The front page of this weekend’s paper forecast the future of our current demographic explosion. Our population, which has almost tripled in the past 30 years is projected to reach 130 million by 2050, this is in a country a little smaller than the U.S state of Oregon. Walk down certain streets of the capital city, even at 2 am and it is so congested that the pedestrians, cars and the ubiquitous motorcycle-taxis (boda-bodas) fight to co-exist on our narrow, potholed roads. Yet at the same time we have a Member of Parliament declare that making homosexuality legal is a threat to human civilization!
While my dad, who to my surprise agrees with me, tells me that this particular MP is a crazy fundamentalist and his views are fringe, I am not so assured. When another newspaper headline in the same week screams UN, AMNESTY PROMOTE HOMOS I cannot help but worry. When my opinions on the matter are considered so contrary that I cannot express them to extended family, particularly to the more religious members who are supposed to be more, oh I don’t know, tolerant? Christ-like? Well, then I can’t help but be concerned about the impact my intended letter to the editor will have.
I am expressing this to my dad on the way home from work.
“You should write a letter to the editor,†he suggests.
“I intend to,†a lot of times my Dad and I simply avoid communicating directly about contentious issues, even when they are important to us, but sometimes we surprise each other by being on the same page.

“I know, people will start asking you, are you by any chance related to that lesbian…?†We both laugh. But it’s not really funny.

I think it would be incredibly brave of you to take any sort of stance here, as long as you are safe. You seem more than thoughtful and prepared where consequences are concerned. I would be very happy to see a copy of that letter posted here if you do send it.
