History Forsaken

I don't know how many of you know about this, but the House of Representatives here in the US introduced a bill on December 18th that will designate the first week in may as "American Religious History Week." Here's what they're hoping to accomplish:

"Resolved, That the United States House of Representatives----

(1) affirms the rich spiritual and diverse religious history of our Nation's founding and subsequent history, including up to the current day;

(2) recognizes that the religious foundations of faith on which America was built are critical underpinnings of our Nation's most valuable institutions and form the inseparable foundation for America's representative processes, legal systems, and societal structures;

(3) rejects, in the strongest possible terms, any effort to remove, obscure, or purposely omit such history from our Nation's public buildings and educational resources; and

(4) expresses support for designation of a `American Religious History Week' every year for the appreciation of and education on America's history of religious faith."

Resolution 888 in its entirery outlines every mention of Christianity made in regards to the United States. Well, those that favor the US being a solely Christian land. From stating that the original Congress attended church services en masse to quoting FDR everytime he prayed in public, the proposed bill tried to create a focal religion for the US, despite the fact that this country was founded to escape religious persecution. Instead of celebrating FREEDOM OF RELIGION as it was dictated in the Constitution's Bill of Rights, Resolution 888 highlights our country's Christian past. Whatever happened to separation of church and state? Whatever happened to escaping religious persecution? Whatever happened to the Constitution, which states that the government will not support an establishment of a national religion? What happened to religious freedom in the United States the way it was meant to be?
