Find This Film: '!Women Art Revolution'

Last week, the movie theater uptown had a film festival. On Thursday, I joined a few of my friends to the screening of "!Women Art Revolution," a film by Lynn Hershman Leeson.

The homepage of the "!Women's Art Revolution" website describes the film as, "... intimate interviews, art, and rarely seen archival film and video footage, !Women Art Revolution reveals how the Feminist Art Movement fused free speech and politics into an art that radically transformed the art and culture of our times."

... yeah, it was just as cool as it sounds. Actually, it was probably even more cool than it sounds because that blurb doesn't even mention the film's footage of the Senate debate over obscenity in "The Dinner Party," or the Laurie Anderson/Janis Joplin/Sleater-Kinney/etc. soundtrack.

This film featured so many incredible women: The Guerilla Girls, Judy Chicago, Miranda July, and so on. They all told the most wonderful stories about their art, their feminism, and how the two intertwined in the end - it was captivating and inspirational. The entire time, I thought, "Man, I WISH I could be as badass as these women!"

I told that to my boss the next day and she replied, "What do you mean, you are totally that badass!"

And I realized that I am, and that was a pretty cool feeling.

If you every happen the opportunity, please watch '!Women Art Revolution.' I hope it makes you feel badass too.
