(I don't think we have a thread like this, so we definitely should.)
I watched Fried Green Tomatoes last night and I have this overwhelming urge now to go out and buy it and watch it again and again and again. It's absolutely going on my list of Best Movies Ever, and I may have fallen in love with Ruth.
So I thought that we should have a thread to recommend women-centered movies with feminist themes. Such as this one.
I can think of two others off the top of my head (Boys on the Side and The Colour Purple) and that's pretty much it. So ... tell me what's your favourite feminist-y movie (I keep wanting to say 'chickflick'. We should steal the word and re-appropriate it for our cause).
(Also, if someone could PM me and tell me who the eff Ninny is, that'd be great. Right until the very end, I kept waiting for her to explain how she fit into the story, but if she mentioned it, it flew right past me.)

Iron Jawed Angels. If These Walls Could Talk 1 and 2. The first is about abortion, and the second is based around lesbian relationship although many of the clips are feminist based and the second story is all about the women's movement in the 70s.

Big thumbs up to Dylan's suggestions.
And whooboy, this could be a mighty big list, even with a dearth of feminist film and women-made film, so I'll have to reign myself in for now since I'm trying to meet a deadline for a piece I already missed.
But I just rewatched Antonia's Line a couple weeks ago, so that one's fresh.
What else? The Magdalene Launderies, Norma Rae, The Accused, A League of Their Own, Bread and Roses, Silkwood, Out of Africa, Ladybird, Ladybird, Frieda, The handmaid's Tale, The Bandit Queen, The Joy Luck Club, Fire, Leaving Normal, The Nasty Girl, Orlando, The Hours, and for the love of Hel, Thelma and Louise.

Oh a must aggree with Heather, A League of Their Own was soooo good. And Boys On the Side Joey is one of the few movies I actually own.
I also got to say I love Blue Crush. The whole women power thing gets me really into it though in the end ofcourse she falls in love with some guy and the guy was what she needed to conquer the battle.... The movie its self always makes me feel like I can do anything though and I love that.
Also Now And Then to me has aways gotten me, Its very girl power vibe.

Love Fried Green Tomatoes. Great movie. The obvious one that comes to mind is Thelma and Louise, which get sme every time. A less obvious one is The DEscent which is a horror movie, but centred around these really strong women, so I was pleasantly surprised.
Like Heather said this could turn o ut to be a looooong list so maybe I will have a think about the rest of them and come up with some ultimate favourites

Heather - It never occured to me to put Out of Africa on this list! It's my favourite movie ever, and a large part of that is Meryl Streep's role and the way she handles her relationship (omg, I want to marry Denys Finch Hatton), but I guess I never realized how much her strenght and independence is a central theme of the movie. I'm such a dork. I have to go and re-watch it.
And wow, so many suggestions. I need to make a list of movies to rent.

I have to say V for Vendetta because Evi goes through a lot and remains strong the entire time. There is also the very powerful story of the lesbian couple, which is my favorite part of the movie. I think it really speaks to people. I would also say White Oleander because the main character goes through many different things in life in many different phases, but in the end does what is right for her no matter what the pressures become.

Oh yes, Antonia's Line! I'm still so sad that my friends in Holland seem never to have heard of it, since it is Dutch and all.
And, this one is a little strange for this list, but War of the Roses. I love that Kathleen Turner's character still doesn't love him anymore at the end and they didn't turn it into a typical "that's so sad" Hollywood movie, but left it as the tragedy it was.
Widow's Peak - one of the best mystery movies of the past 20 years. How can you not love Natasha Richardson and Mia Farrow together? Plus most anything that Lynn or Vanessa Redgrave do (usually bringing Natasha along with them). Vanessa Redgrave broke my heart in If These Walls Could Talk 2 - if her performance doesn't make you have some passion around gay rights/gay marriage, I don't know what would.

LOVED Widow's Peak.

Gotta ask: how is that feminist? FYI, here's the article the movie was based on.
Thought of a few more this morning in passing: Lianna (likely the first film about coming to terms as a lesbian made, and it's so sensitively done), Desert Hearts, Mrs, Brown, Vera Drake, North Country, Monster, Whale Rider, Oleanna (which is more, really, a demonstration of patriarchy, but it is intended to be so), The Spitfire Grill, Girls Town, and big classic, The Children's Hour.

I recently saw Ghost World for the third time; loved it the first time, loathed it the second, and liked it again the third time. I wouldn't necessarily call it feminist-y but the protagonists are female and it raises different types of questions.
Despite being a little cheesy, I loved Tank Girl in high school but haven't seen it recently. The soundtrak alone is pretty great.

I loved Antonia's Line, and in fact saw it in a philosophy class . Boys on the Side is also a great feminist flick, and I really appreciated But I'm A Cheerleader!

I think she felt the surfer girl part is feminist, but I would beg to differ because if it was feminist she wouldn't "need" the guy to conquer the battle. Yes, sometimes you get someone you love after a difficult situation, but to really get over it they shouldn't always be necessary. I guess it is iffy simply because sometimes we do find someone who really helps us, and we end up keeping them with us.

OK, after seeing Lynn Redgrave on Desperate Housewives the other night, I have to pull my all-out endorsement of her projects from my list (really, the Weight Watchers ads should have tipped me off).
But definitely go see anything with Vanessa Redgrave in it!
