I found this while looking for information on Depo. It's a great resource for basically anyone who is having sex or thinking about having sex.

Ugh Depo. I had a horrible horrible experience with Depo. Great site though, I think more colleges should put together such comprehensive sites for sex education.

What sort of experience?
I've been thinking I'd like to go on that for a number of reasons (see: more freedom and no periods), so I'm curious to hear about other people's experiences.

Dianna, a good GYN wouldn't be putting a girl your age, who is right in the big phase of her life when the vital growth of bone density is at a premium, on Depo, unless she had something going on which it was an express treatment for, like endometriosis.

It also doesn't mean no periods. Some women using Depo have scanty or fewer periods. Others spot incessantly. In either case, it means less predictability of bleeding, not more.

Really, since so few studies have been done on younger adolescents and hormonal birth control, period (no pun intended), if you're not sexually active anyway, there's really no sound reason to consider it. The risks simply may likely outweigh the benefits. If you were sexually active, the soundedest advice if you were bound and determined to use hormonal methods would be to have you try the most easily reversible first, as well, since then you can determine what side effects you experience and not be stuck with them as unknowingly for three-six months due to the one Depo injection.

FYI, questions like this can always easily be referred over to [url=http://www.scarleteen.com]Scarleteen where we've got a ton of information cultivated over eight years online now on these issues (including in-depth user discussion by a myriad of users on about every method you can shake a stick at), as well as a substantial volunteer staff to answer questions like these.

I agree with Heather, going on Depo or even other hormonal birth control methods, especially just to stop a period is not always the best idea. My sister is on Depo, only because for a long time she couldn't get her tubes tied and has other complications that prevent her from getting a IUD. She has had lots of spotting, unpredictable periods and migraines while using Depo. The only reason why I am even considering it is that because I am breastfeeding I have very limited options when it comes to hormonal birth control and because I know I'll only need to use it for a limited period of time; until I stop breastfeeding (and I'll switch to something else) or my partner gets a vasectomy.

(I saw you talk about depressing side effects in another post, Brooke: you stuck on the idea of a hormonal method? Because combining non-hormonal methods is just as effective, and also, sans most side effects. Happy to counsel you PM on the matter if you wanted some help.)

Just in terms of birth control not leading to "no periods"--

I started on birth control shortly before I turned 16. The first thing I tried was the patch. Now, there's no question that the birth control was desperately needed: I sometimes bled for as long as 16 or 17 days, and I was sick as a dog the entire time. There was no regularity, and I was bedbound for the first few days of having it.

Birth control helped. Even so, I still sometimes bled at odd times, and at one point, I was bleeding a small but steady amount continously (which is when I switched to the nuva ring). Currently, I'm doing better, but the idea of "no periods" isn't always going to play out the way you want it to--I know from experience.

Hormonal birth control isn't ever risk-free. You're not just going to get the good parts--you're can get nasty parts that you really don't want, too.

In essence?

As with all medication, if you don't need it, don't take it.

I somehow doubt we'll ever be the same--there's too much poison and confusion on your face
